Why Liner Material Changes Magnetic Flow Meter Performance

The liner separates the process fluid from the metal tube. It also keeps the electrode signal stable. If the liner swells, cracks, or lifts, the meter reads high or drifts. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A failed liner often looks fine from the outside but destroys measurement accuracy.


Magnetic flow meters work with conductive liquids. The liner must be a good insulator. It must also resist your exact fluid mix at the operating temperature. A liner that works in water may fail in a solvent blend. Pressure spikes and abrasive solids add more stress on the liner.


PTFE Liners for Strong Acids and High Temperature

PTFE liner is the first choice for aggressive chemicals. It resists hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, and many solvents. Do not use rubber liners with oils, solvents, strong acids, or caustics. Rubber swells and loses bond strength. We see this with hydrocarbon contaminated wastewater. A refinery or chemical park often needs PTFE or PFA instead of rubber on lines that carry trace solvents.

Neoprene is a synthetic rubber. It handles seawater, brackish water, and some oily or greasy water better than natural rubber. Neoprene works well in desalination plants, ballast water lines, and port utility systems. Temperature range is similar to rubber, usually 0 to 70 degrees C.


For a seawater flow meter for desalination plant intake, we often recommend neoprene liner on a DN150 or DN200 magnetic flow meter. Neoprene resists salt attack and has decent abrasion resistance for sand particles in raw seawater. It is not a chemical liner. Do not use neoprene with solvents or concentrated acids.

For clean water and raw water below 60 degrees C, rubber liner is enough. For seawater and brackish water, neoprene is the common choice. For acids, caustics, solvents, or any fluid above 80 degrees C, PTFE or PFA is normally required. For high purity or hot aggressive chemicals, PFA gives extra safety.
