Engineers do not want a separate loop-powered indicator when panel space is tight. A compact magflow meter with a built-in display solves that panel space problem. The screen shows instantaneous flow in m3/h, totalized volume in m3, reverse flow indication, and alarm codes. For batching systems, a bright display near the fill valve lets operators read the batch total without walking to the PLC HMI.

The most common panel request is a simple two-line LCD with totalizer and flow rate. The second request is a TFT display that shows a trend curve for empty pipe detection and electrode coating.

Display Types and Model Selection

Silver Automation Instruments offers three display configurations. The basic version uses a backlit LCD with two lines and a four-button keypad. This configuration works well for clean water, raw water intake, and chilled water loops. The second version uses a TFT color display with local configuration menus in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. The third version is a remote mount display. The sensor can sit in a wet pit or a tight pipe rack while the display mounts on a panel door up to 10 meters away.

For automation layouts, the remote mount option often solves a real problem. Last year a water utility in the Philippines installed the sensor in a below-grade chamber. The display went into the control cabinet at grade level. Operators read flow without opening the chamber. The empty pipe alarm also stayed visible on the local display.

Signal Outputs That Match PLC and SCADA Inputs

The integrated electronic smart display on a magflow meter should not be a passive indicator. The display should also carry the signal outputs your automation system needs. Our standard magflow meters include 4-20 mA HART, pulse output, and RS485 MODBUS RTU. Some models include two relay outputs for high flow, low flow, empty pipe, or reverse flow alarms.

In practice, many SMEs in Southeast Asia and the Middle East run the 4-20 mA signal to a PLC analog input and keep MODBUS as a backup for diagnostics. The local display shows the same process variable as the PLC. Loop checks become faster. You can compare the display value against the SCADA value without a handheld communicator.

Meter Sizing and Fluid Details That Affect the Display

For a reliable reading, provide the pipe size in DN, normal and maximum flow rate, fluid type, temperature, and pressure. Magflow meters need a minimum conductivity. Most water-based fluids work well above 5 µS/cm. Pure demineralized water or some solvents may need a different meter type.

Line size is not the same as flow range. A DN100 pipe moving only 3 m3/h will produce a weak signal. We often recommend a reduced bore magflow meter for low flow velocity. The display should also be set for the correct units. Our factory default is m3/h and totalized m3. If you need liters per minute or kg/h, tell us before dispatch.
